Week 7 - Biology
Cell Structure & Function
Now that we know how to identify the four biomolecules, we’ll begin moving outward in our level of cellular organization to discuss the different types of cells. Once we understand how structure & function are related, we’ll discuss what makes something living.
BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:
define all terms from the previous 6 weeks,
compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells,
identify and describe the organelles within a cell,
discuss how the structure of a cell and its unique morphological characteristics relate to specific functions, and
describe what it means to be living.
Your Week Ahead
Day 1: Prokaryotes & Eukaryotes
We’ll start the day reviewing properties of water and pH, then use the remaining time to work on your prokaryotes/eukaryote activity.
After class, read pages 190-194 in your textbook and begin to study for your quiz on Day 3!
For this week, you have a journal entry that will be due next Monday. This journal entry needs to be on something that’s from the natural world (no pets or people). For this journal entry, you should AT LEAST have the following:
An observation on something that you create and label a null and alternate hypothesis (i.e. as an example, I observe birds by the lake in the morning and say wonder if they’re present because the time of day… I could say that there’s no significant difference in bird population by the lake with respect to time of day, with an alternate hypothesis saying that birds will be found at the lake significantly more in the morning.
A drawing that is labeled properly.
A line graph that is labeled properly. Make sure you look at what type of data you should use on a line graph! This graph needs to use real data.
Day 2: Cell Structure & Function
You’ll begin your Day 2 with another Gizmos identifying organelles within eukaryotic cells in more detail. Use the lab given to walk you through the material.
Click this link to go to your Gizmos Cell Structure Activity.
AFTER CLASS, read pages 196-207 & have your Gizmos completed by next class.
STUDY for your quiz!
Day 3: Microscopes
You’ll begin class prepping for a quiz on chemistry, water, & biological macromolecules.
We’ll continue with using your microscope knowledge to view various types of cells, identify their structure and function, and further gain insight into the function of organelles.
AFTER CLASS, read 208-217 in your textbook.

IMPORTANT DATES
Quiz on your DAY 1 of next week covering chemistry review, properties of water, and biological macromolecules.
Test in a little over 2 weeks
Did you…?
… finish the prokaryotes/eukaryotes activity from Monday?
… read (190-217 in your textbook) the mentioned pages in your textbook?
… finish your Gizmos on Cell Structure?
… finish your “Terms to Know: Week 7”? We’re adding a good bit of terms each week, so please stay on top of these.
… finish your microscopy lab from Day 3?
