Week 5 - Biology
Finish Water & Biological Macromolecules
This week will be dedicated to identifying and differentiating the four major biological macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, & proteins.
BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:
define all terms from the previous 4 weeks,
be able to:
successfully describe all essential concepts relating to the scientific method,
identify the parts of a Leica DM500 compound microscope and describe each part’s function, and
recite all appropriate rules related to significant figures and know how to use them appropriately when calculating with measured numbers.
identify the characteristics of each monomer of the four macromolecules,
differentiate between monomers and polymers,
and compare where each macromolecule can be found within our diets.
Your Week Ahead
No Shortened class due to College Fair/Retreat
We don’t have your normal 50-minute class on Monday; rather, we’ll have two 80-minute classes.
Day 1: Properties of Water, Part 1
You’ll begin your first class where you left off with your properties of water lab.
Study for your quiz next block! This is covering parts of the microscope and scientific method concepts.
Also for next week, complete your next journal observation (label it journal 3) by finding at least 2 plants and journal about them. Try drawing leaves, the branches, looking for things that live on them, and look back to your journaling techniques page from the beginning of the year to help if you get stumped. This should look like it took you 30 minutes to complete, and it will be due next Monday.
Day 2: Quiz , Finish Water, & Biological Macromolecules
You’ll begin your Day 2 with a quiz and then move into a discussion of macromolecules and introduce chemical reactions and how enzymes play an integral role in those processes. You’ll end the class working on your case study on enzymes through Gizmos, if time allows.
AFTER CLASS, read pages 46-53 & review the study guide page on page 55. Do you feel confident about the essential topics on that page and are ready to move forward?
AFTER CLASS, be sure to watch the video on macromolecules if you didn’t have time to finish it in class. If you feel comfortable with this content, then go ahead to the first four videos I’ve created on each of the four biological macromolecules after it found in the content videos link here.

IMPORTANT DATES
Quiz 2 this week (Thursday/Friday)
Test on your DAY 3 next week.
Did you…?
… complete your “Properties of Water” lab?
… watch and take notes on the “Biological Macromolecules” content video ?(If you did this already, great; not required for Amoeba sisters video, though. I have another video next week that I created that I’m going to want you to check with your notes).
… check that you can sign into Gizmos? Depending on our speed this week, you might have either started or finished your gizmos from Day 2.
… complete your journal 3?
