Week 3 - Biology
Lab Equipment & The Chemistry of Life
This week will be dedicated to identifying and appropriately using biological lab equipment while all introducing key terminology and essential concepts associated with the chemistry of life.
BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:
define all terms from the previous 2 weeks,
identify the 6 rules related to significant figures in biology,
use significant figures appropriately when using and calculating data in biology,
define and compare protons, neutrons, and electrons,
describe the structure of an atom and our understanding of its’ structure in a three-dimensional space,
compare atoms, elements, and isotopes, and
name the parts of a compound microscope and describe their function.
Your Week Ahead
Day 1: Lab Equipment
We’ll have our final review of classroom logistics: remember to submit the six assignments from last week and check your box for graded papers from the previous week. NOTE - Check your MySA for missing assignments and turn those in ASAP; remember that most assignments can have a partial credit for being turned in late.
We’ll discuss how some people noticed two possible answers in their “Experiment” packet when calculating averages of potato 2. This connects to a new concept, learning about the importance of significant figures.
We will then break into groups at the lab tables and complete the lab called “Lab Equipment”
We’ll also walk through the parts of the microscope to complete the second page of this week’s “Terms to Know”. If we don’t get to this in class, we’ll begin this the following class.
AFTER CLASS, read pages 34-39 in your textbook.
You will NOT have another observation due next Monday.
Day 2: Quiz, Then Measuring Challenge
We will begin with your first quiz.
After the quiz, we’ll discuss significant figures, and continue with a measuring challenge.
We’ll also review the microscope if you don’t have time
AFTER CLASS, watch the video below to review significant figures for next week.
Day 3: Chemistry of Life
We’ll review then begin with discussion on atoms, elements, and isotopes, then break into groups to see how chemistry connects in our everyday lives.
AFTER CLASS, read pages 40-49 in your textbook. Remember, no Observation due this next week since I still have your journals to review from last week. Enjoy your break!

IMPORTANT DATES
Quiz 1 on Day 2 this week covering Terms to Know.
Be sure to turn in your “Lab Equipment” & “Measuring Challenge” labs by next Monday.
Did you…?
… complete your “Lab Equipment” & “Measuring Challenge” labs to submit them by next Monday’s class?
… finish your readings (pages 34-39/40-49) in your textbook?
… finish your “Terms to Know”?
