Week 24 - Biology
An Introduction into Organismal Diversity
It’s time to study life! You’ll start off this week finalizing our concepts of taxonomy and phylogeny, connecting ecological relationships across the four eukaryotic kingdoms, then take a step back and look at how we classify various types of life based on those apomorphic traits.
BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:
define appropriate terminology in your “Terms to Know” pages for week 24,
see how life does not evolve in a vacuum; rather, mutations give rise to adaptations that work better in a given ecosystem.
differentiate bacteria, archaea, protists, fungi, animals, and plants,
describe organisms within each clade above,
analyze the phylogenetic tree of life, and
begin to characterize types of organisms within each clade.
Your Week Ahead
Day 1: Taxonomy & Phylogenetics
We’ll finish our discussion of taxonomy then introduce phylogeny, a concept that will prepare us for a pylogenetics lab tomorrow.
Day 2: Phylogenetics Lab
We’ll continue class with a phylogenetics lab to practice creating trees.
Day 3: Diversity Discussion
After this intro lab this week, we’ll spend some time outside connecting these discussions.
Begin looking for the topic of your choice. Remember, topics are chosen on a first come basis. Email me if you have a topic of interest. This will be due March 1st. A printout will be needed and in your block’s box.

Quiz on Day 3 of next week covering Terrestrial and aquatic biomes
Did you…?
… finish Diversity of Organisms, Part 1? (Mutant Planet activity) This should have been turned in.
… finish your phylogenetics lab from Day 2? You’ll turn this in Monday.
… find (or begin researching) your topic to research for your relationships paper? Topics will be due 3/1.
… begin studying for your quiz on terrestrial and aquatic biomes?
