Week 23 - Biology

Taxonomy & Phylogeny

You can’t study animals, plants, fungi, or any other organism on the planet without understanding how we classify them. This week is dedicated to reviewing the system of binomial nomenclature and understanding how we view relatedness among organisms through phylogenetic trees.

BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:

  • use all appropriate terminology found on your week 23 “Terms to Know”,

  • describe how to appropriately write a binomen (also known as a species of scientific name),

  • differentiate taxonomy and phylogeny,

  • build a phylogenetic tree based on synapomorphic characteristics,

  • analyze a phylogenetic tree and describe relatedness among organisms based off shared traits, and

  • Describe the levels of taxonomic hierarchy.

Your Week Ahead

Day 1: Ecology Connection & Taxonomy Review

  1. You’ll start class turning in your journal summarizing a research paper you found, review key points from last week, then begin our taxonomy introduction. If you were struggling with your journal, you can turn it in on your day 2 without any late credit. We’ll discuss this more in class.

  2. After class, study for your test on Day 3! This is all things Genetic from this semester (meiosis, Punnett squares, DNA structure, replication, and central dogma of molecular biology). Knowing terminology is very helpful.

Day 2: Taxonomy Intro & Phylogenetics Discussion

  1. We’ll jump into a lab better understanding how to describe organisms that are related to each other using phylogenetic trees.

  2. After class, read pages 510-522 in your textbook AND STUDY FOR YOUR TEST!

Day 3: Genetics Test

It’s test day. You’ve got this!
