Week 20 - Biology

Meiosis, DNA Replication & Gene Expression

You’ll now continue connecting previous knowledge with understanding how genes go from a sequence of nucleotides to ultimately being physically expressed in an organism.

BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:

  • use all appropriate terminology found on your week 20 “Terms to Know”,

  • describe the process of meiosis while contrasting its phases with that of mitosis,

  • review the steps of how genes move from DNA to RNA to proteins, and

  • discuss the central dogma of molecular biology. Essentially, can you describe the processes of transcription and translation?

Your Week Ahead

Day 1: Meiosis

  1. You’ll start the day testing your knowledge with Punnett Squares. Try starting class with getting out a sheet of paper and completing a Punnett square of a dihybrid cross.

  2. We’ll then dive into a deeper discussion into DNA replication.

  3. After class, read pages 344-353 in your textbook.

  4. Also after class, review the key terms and begin completing it.

Day 2: DNA Replication & Meiosis

  1. We’ll pick up with where you left off last class then continue with watching the videos below in order. If you finish with time to spare, use it to either read your pages in the textbook or work on other coursework.

  2. After class, read pages 362-371 in your textbook and take notes on this reading.

Day 3: Transcription & Translation

  1. Blocks 5 & 7, Watch the video below and use this time wisely to review your material, then watch the content videos listed below and take notes on them. My hope is that you feel confident in the 6 bullet points. If you’ve done that, use the textbooks in the back of the classroom to read (if you haven’t been this week) from this past week, then use the remaining time as a study hall.

  2. After class, read pages 372-383 in your textbook and take notes on this reading. If you’re struggling with this as well, please use the class time to read your textbook.

  3. To further review this material, you have a series of content videos that I have created. These cover:

    1. Mitosis

    2. Meiosis

    3. Punnett Squares

    4. DNA Structure

    5. DNA Replication

    6. Transcription & Translation

  4. You should have notes on each of the topics above.

IMPORTANT DATES

Quiz on Punnett Squares on Thursday/Friday of next week.

Did you…?

  • … complete your “Terms to Know: Week 20”? I will be checking this particular terms to know NEXT WEEK.

  • … finish your readings above in your textbook? I’m noticing that some students are not doing readings, which is likely go to result in reading quizzes in the near future if this patterns continues.
