Week 2 - Biology

Essential Science Skills: Reviewing the Scientific Method

This week will be dedicated to reviewing the scientific method while learning how to write and analyze data as a scientist, and how to use common tools found in the lab.

BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:

  • define all terms from the previous week,

  • thoroughly describe the 6 steps of the scientific method,

  • know the difference between primary and secondary literature,

  • describe differences between tables and figures,

  • describe the differences between a null hypothesis and alternate hypothesis, and

  • understand hypothesis testing and the differences between the terms reject vs. fail to reject.

Your Week Ahead

Day 1: The Scientific Method

  1. We will begin with reviewing logistics from last week to make sure students feel comfortable with the weekly norms and processes.

  2. Students should turn in their science of patterns activity in their respective block’s box.

  3. After explaining the layout of the week, students will begin the first of their activities with their lab partner, each describing the six steps to the scientific method:

    1. Observe

    2. Question

    3. Hypothesize

    4. Experiment

    5. Analyze

    6. Conclude

  4. You will continue working through your activities, finishing at least the “Question” lab with 10 specimens at lab tables.

  5. AFTER CLASS, read pages 4-9 in your textbook. You also have a journal entry due next week observing anything you choose. We’ll discuss in more detail in class, but it needs to be a 30-minute observation; don’t forget about your journaling techniques page to help you get started.

Day 2: Experiment (Continuing Activities Reviewing the Scientific Method)

  1. Students should pick up where they left off on Day 1, finishing the 6 activities introduced on Day

  2. AFTER CLASS, read pages 10-15 in your textbook. Also, complete at least up to Hypothesis out of the 6-scientific method activities if you haven’t already done so in class.

Day 3: Analyze & Conclude

  1. We will finish your scientific methods activities and begin looking at lab tools on Monday. Be sure that all 6 of your scientific method activities are completed for Monday.

  2. AFTER CLASS, read pages 17-19, 24-25 in your textbook AND make sure that you complete your second observation by next Monday as well.

  3. Study for your quiz on Day 2 next week reviewing the terms to know!

All 6 “Scientific Method” activities & “Lab Equipment” lab due in your block’s box by next Monday’s class.

Quiz 1 on Terms To Know next week on Day 2 (Tuesday/Wednesday)

Did you…?

  • … complete your 6 “Scientific Methods” activities to submit them by next Monday’s class?

  • … finish your readings (pages 4-9/10-15/17-19/24-25) in your textbook?

  • … finish your “Terms to Know”?

  • … complete your second observation in your journal? Remember to label the upper right hand corner with “Journal 2” and the date you completed it.
