Week 12 - Biology

A Deep Dive into Photosynthesis

This full week of classes will be dedicated to truly reinforcing the pathways discussed on Day 3 of last week. We’ll make sure that you understand where inputs are needed within separate reactions and extract organic pigments out of fall leaves.

BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, you should be able to:

  • Describe the inputs & outputs of photosynthesis,

  • Compare the light-dependent and light-independent reactions,

  • Describe the four dominant pigments use by plants, algae (e.g. green algae are plants, red algae are protists), and other protists that are photosynthetic to convert light energy into chemical energy,

  • Discuss the processes of photosystems II & photosystems I,

  • Know your terms for week 11 (and the previous weeks!), and

  • Walk through the entire process of photosynthesis by drawing the systems.

Your Week Ahead

Day 1: Walk through Pathways

  1. We’ll start class with a quick walk-through of your terms to know from last week and finish the gizmos if you’re needing extra time.

  2. Today’s all about making sure that you know the inputs and outputs, and understand how cyclic these pathways are (e.g. NADP+ and H making NADPH and back again). We’ll draw out the process next class after reviewing it last week.

  3. Remember that you have a quiz on Day 3 this week reviewing cell structure and cell transport. Cell Transport is reviewed through your notes and the two videos below, and you should know cell structure from your gizmos (e.g. what does the golgi do?)

  4. After class, look over the questions on page 244 & 245 of your textbook. Could you answer these questions? Try answering them on a separate sheet of paper and we’ll walk through the answers later this week.

Day 2: Drawing & Introducing Pigments Lab

  1. We’ll spend today drawing out the process of photosynthesis. Next week you’ll harvest leaves to extract various color pigments that are responsible for the process of photosynthesis. It’s always a fun lab to remember!

  2. After class, study for your quiz on Day 3! The two videos that could assist you in reviewing are above surrounding cell transport. Also remember though that cell structure is not in these videos, and you should review those items from the gizmos.

Day 3: Quiz & Review Day

  1. We’ll start with your quiz reviewing cell structure and transport.

  2. We'll use the rest of class to draw out these pathways again, reviewing each other, and finish with connecting this to next week. We’ll also review for your test.

  3. After class, study for your test on Day 3 next week!

IMPORTANT DATES

.Quiz covering cell structure and cell transport on this week’s Day 3.

Test on all the above items on next week’s Day 3. That’s : Chemical reactions, enzymes, cell history, cell structure, and cell transport.

Did you…?

  • … study for your quiz on day 3 of this week?

  • … study for your test on day 3 of next week? (November 9 or 10)

  • … read your pages in your textbook from last week if you’re still confused on the process of photosynthesis?
